Save Ferris- Come On Eileen

A ska cover of Come On Eileen? I think so! I mean who doesn't love ska especially ska covers?! I absolutely love this hyped up, head banging cover. I think for a week or so this was the only song that I listened to. Listen to it. You will not be disappointed. Enjoy!

Death Cab For Cutie-Earth Angel

This cover has more elements of rock than the original, of course. The background piano and it's compostion is also a nice addition and I would have enjoyed a cover with just the piano and vocals. That said, I did enjoy their take on this classic song.

Muse-Can't Take My Eyes Off Of You

This is the perfect example of taking an old pop song from the 1960's and converting it into a rock'n'roll masterpiece. This cover screams rock, literally. During the chorus, it is switched up into a mosh pit heaven and everything goes wild. I have to say that I love this cover more than the original.

Warpaint-Ashes to Ashes

This lo-fi cover of David Bowie's Ashes to Ashes is addicting. I can not stop listening to it. Warpaint's creativity in taking the song and making it their own is amazing and brings them to another level of musicianship. Way to tack one up for girl bands! Enjoy!

Sydney Wayser-Wouldn't It Be Nice

Wouldn't It Be Nice is such a light-hearted song that a ukulele cover only makes sense. This is an absolutely cute cover and is ten times better than Zoey Deschanel cover of the same song. I love the round about with the last two lines of the song too. Also, audience participation is always a plus!

Nirvana-Where Did You Sleep Last Night?

The closing song to Nirvana's iconic MTV Unplugged session is well-known to any Nirvana fans. Personally, it has become a performance forever immortalized with the tragic death of Kurt Cobain. This song is dark and haunting but the emotion Cobain sang it with makes it even more powerful.

Natalie Lungley-Video Games

Lana Del Rey has a very unique voice so when people do covers of her songs, the songs seem to lose some of their magic and uniqueness. However, Natalie Lungley does a great job at preserving some of that uniqueness in her cover of Video Games. While some said in the comments of her video that she tried to replicate Lana's voice, I feel that Natalie did the best to her ability to keep that from happening. All in all, it is a very good cover. Enjoy!

The Cramps- Heartbreak Hotel

How can you not love a psychobilly cover of Elvis's Heartbreak Hotel?! Well, The Cramps cover is just that. The Cramps take this song and put some life into. No longer is it a slow sad song to hang your head to but instead it's become a song let loose and possibly punch someone in the face. Just kidding! Enjoy!

Patti Smith-Smells Like Teen Spirit

Here's Patti Smith's country folk version of Nirvana's Smells Like Teen Spirit. She even adds her own verses which is absolutely amazing. The thing I love about this cover is that it is constantly building up throughout the entire song.  Enjoy!

Patti Smith-Everybody Wants to Rule the World

When I posted the Care Bears on Fire cover of this song, I came across Patti Smith's cover. I actually really like her version but decided to hold off on posting her cover because there are other songs of her's I wanted to post as well. First, however, is Patti Smith's version of Everybody Wants to Rule the World that is amazing in it's own right and that I hope everyone loves. But it's Patti Smith so how can you not love her music. Rome-Rehab

This was more of a tribute song than a cover but I really loved it. I remember hearing this version of Rehab a few days after the death of Amy Winehouse and I thought it was really amazing. The lyrics are haunting and heartbreaking. You can really hear the emotion of Rome from the way he sang it. It truly is a touching tribute song to a very talented but troubled artist.

Care Bears on Fire- Everybody Wants to Rule the World

Care Bears on Fire's cover of Everybody Wants to Rule the World is as pop punk riot grrl you can get. The original is slower, darker, and everything the 80s was about according to musical style. Care Bears on Fire's cover is complete opposite of that. They speed up the tempo and turned their amps all the way up to fit their pop punk sound. It's in your face and you either hate it or love it, there is no in between. I actually really liked this cover when I first heard it and found myself nodding my head to it. They did a really great job with this cover and making it a pop punk song. Enjoy!

Trampled By Turtles- Rebellion(Lies)

This is pure awesomeness. Trampled By Turtles covers Rebellion(Lies) by Arcade Fire and my ears have never been happier when listening to this cover.

Trampled By Turtles are a indie bluegrass band. Most of their instruments consists of acoustic guitar, fiddle, banjo, and the mandolin. For me, this band has all my favorite instruments so it was no surprise that I fell in love with their cover. When I heard this cover, my foot automatically began to tap and I was overcome with the feeling to jump out of my seat and dance. I believe I have to thank the bluegrass style of the cover for that feeling.

Side note: The bearded guy on fiddle is crazy good. However, when ever I see a bearded man playing the fiddle/violin, I fear for the safety of their beard. I feel like their beard is going to get caught in the strings or tangled in the bow which will result in the unfortunate shaving or clipping of their glorious beard.

This cover is truly amazing and it brought me to discover a new band that I would have never known about. Check them out! Enjoy!

Nicki Bluhm and the Gamblers- You're No Good

Nicki Bluhm and the Gamblers' van sessions are the best thing I've seen on YouTube in a very long time. I sat in front of the computer just watching video after video of theirs till I finally decided on their cover of You're No Good by Linda Ronstadt to write about. Let me tell you, it was not an easy choice to pick because all their covers are so good. So don't be surprised to see more of them on the blog.

When touring I can imagine how much time there is to kill. Nicki Bluhm and the Gamblers have found a way to use their time wisely by making cover videos. Their van sessions are amazing and while I don't recommend multitasking while driving, they seem to pull it off.

Nicki Bluhm has an amazing voice which resembles Linda Ronstadt's perfectly and their harmonies are amazing as well. The simplicity of their cover is perfect. In this case, less is definitely more. I hate to admit it but I think I like this version more than the original. I encourage you to check out their other van sessions. I promise you it is worth it. Enjoy!

iwantaltitude- Pumped Up Kicks

I love this cover of Pumped Up Kicks and I wish I knew the name of the person covering the song. So for now, I will have to refer to by her YouTube name iwantaltitude.

First off, I really liked the style and composition of the cover. It had a flamenco kind of feel to it. I don't even know if that's the right word to describe it. During some moments of the song, I swore I was hearing a mandolin. As for her voice, it was amazing. She has a bluesy/jazzy thing going on with her voice and it sounded awesome in this cover. I awesome loved the random "scat" improvisation at the end! Enjoy!

Myles and Kolton- I Won't Give Up

While I was writing about the previous post, I remembered about this other cover of I Won't Give Up that I saw on the Ellen Degeneres Show a few months ago.

These two boys, Myles and Kolton, were featured on the show and got an opportunity to play their song as well. I was blown away at how talented these two are. They have amazing voices that complement each other so well which can also stand on their own. I also loved their composition of the song by adding the ukulele. Their cover is just amazing all-around. Enjoy!

Christina Grimmie- I Won't Give Up

I absolutely love this song and Christina Grimmie does an amazing job with it. Her voice has a great range and she is able to sing the low notes of the song and then hit those high notes in the chorus. As I was looking for a cover song to write about, I came across Christina Grimmie's video. Truthfully, I wasn't really expecting anything to magnificent from this video but I was wrong to think that. Christina Grimmie has an amazing voice and I guess, that tells me that I should not judge a book by its cover. Enjoy!

The Morning Benders (POP ETC)- LoveFool

I guess this is just going to be a Morning Benders (POP ETC) day. The song this time is Lovefool by The Cardigans. Lovefool is classic among the hipster crowd and is probably featured in every 90s high school romance movie.

So it's really no surprise indie band, The Morning Benders, decide to cover it. The original has an upbeat sound but the vocals bring down the ''pop" to the song which is actually a really nice combination. As for the cover, it is once again slowed down but not as much as Dreams. The primary instrument is still an acoustic guitar with vocals. Maracas and a tambourine are featured this time which give it a nice feel. Of course, I do miss the "pop" of the song and that classic riff but the Morning Benders still give the original justice while making it their own. Enjoy!

The Morning Benders (POP ETC)-Dreams

The Morning Benders may have changed their name to POP ETC but their sound definitely has not changed. However, this cover was done before the name change so I might be jumping the gun on the whole sound thing. So since that is the case, I am going to be referring to them as The Morning Benders.

The Morning Benders cover Fleetwood Mac's Dreams and totally nail it. The original has a country blues rock feel to it. The guitar has elements of slide guitar giving it the country feel but they complement it with a soft rock style.

The cover is slowed down and only an acoustic guitar and vocals are present in the song. It really is a nice cover and the way it is done shows the beauty of song and it's lyrics. The echo of the vocals gives the listener a sensation of floating and a calm peacefulness envelops you.

GWAR- Carry On Wayward Son

This is definitely the most funniest covers that has been featured on my blog. Oh GWAR, what will you guys do next.

Of course, Kansas and GWAR are on opposite sides of the music genre spectrum. Kansas is the typical 1970's band so GWAR's thrash metal style might seem a little too hardcore of the song Carry On Wayward Son. To no surprise, it is just that but it's funny as hell watching and listening to GWAR cover 70's rock. That said, GWAR did a great job incorporating thrash metal into the song. It wasn't half bad to listen to. Enjoy!

Wye Oak-Strangers

Wye Oak is a band that I've discovered because of this blog. The first time I listened to them was when I wrote about their cover of Mother. I love everything about this band and their sound is really amazing.

On to the cover! I love Wye Oak's version of this song! The vocals of Jenn Wasner are perfect for this song.   I can't seem to find the words to describe her voice. For some reason, I keep coming back to "hauntingly beautiful" so I'll leave it as that for now. Hauntingly beautiful. The guitar solo in the middle of the song is a nice addition as well. It did not take away from the song by being to "flashy" or "loud" in a sense of shoving it in face or in my ears.

Ted Leo and The Pharmacists- Everybody Wants To Rule The World

Tears For Fears 1985 classic hit Everybody Wants to Rule The World is instantly recognizable. Most, if not all, people have heard this song at some point in their life.

Ted Leo and The Pharmacists cover Everybody Wants To Rule The World and they did an excellent job. While they stick closely to the structure of the song, their is noticeable differences. For starters, the tempo is sped up and there is a more "in your face" feel to the song. I feel like that is because the vocals. The vocals in the original are softer while in the cover the vocals have a more edgy punk feel. I kind of liked the cover more than the original but only slightly. Enjoy!

The Doors ft. Scott Weiland-Break On Through

I don't know if this qualifies as an actual cover but it's my blog so I can post it regardless if it is or not. In tribute to Ray Manzarek, keyboardist and co-founding member of the 60's L.A. band The Doors, I decided to post of video of their  1993 induction ceremony into the Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame.

The video is of the three remaining Doors members preforming Break On Through featuring Scott Weiland of Stone Temple Pilots on vocals.  Even though it's pretty hard for anyone to replicate the raw energy of Jim Morrison, Scott Weiland did a good job. He didn't try to embody a Morrison performance, it was almost as if Weiland had a similar performance attitude as Morrison. In which case, it didn't come off as showboating or "trying to hard" to be Jim Morrison.

All in all, it is a really great video of the remaining Doors members coming together again and playing like the ol' days. Enjoy!

RIP Ray Manzarek

Flearoy-Express Yourself

Flearoy was featured earlier in this blog with their cover of Say My Name by Destiny's Child. Well, here they are again covering Chrales Wright's Express Yourself.

Flearoy, it seems, stuck to the original as much as possible. They did speed up the tempo and add a few fillers here and there. However, they mostly kept it simple unlike their version of Say My Name which was covered into more of their style. It's still a well done cover and with a faster tempo it definitely makes dancing to this song inevitable.

THePETEBOX- Where Is My Mind?

I don't know this guy's name but he seems to go by THePETEBOX. He covers Pixies "Where Is My Mind?" which is one of their classics. The original is everything the late 80's rock scene was about. It has elements of psychedelia, grunge, and garage rock. The echoes produced from the vocals and the electric guitar give it a dark but calm feeling.

What I like about this cover is that he incorporates beat-boxing into the song. Every part of the song is either played on his guitar or beat-boxed which he then loops the parts to continue to play throughout the song. This guy has some serious talent and gets really creative with this cover. I also like that he actually shows his process of creating such an intricate cover. Most people prerecord their backing tracks and then post a video of them singing along to it. Of course there is nothing wrong with that but in this cover we get to see the creativity flow which only exemplifies his talent. This is the only video I've seen of THePETEBOX but I'm definitely looking forward to checking out his other videos. Enjoy!

Chris Cendana- At Last

Everyone has heard this timeless classic by Etta James. It's probably the most played song at a wedding for the the first dance between the husband and wife. The intro of the song depicts the feeling of love found at last and the sensation of fluttering which were created by an orchestra of violins. As soon as those violins start to play, it's not hard to recognize and realize that Etta James is about to sing those famous first lyrics "Aaaat Laaaasst!"

This song has been covered by many artists over the years and Etta James is certainly no stranger to that category. The version of At Last that we have all come to know and love is actually of cover itself. The song was originally performed by Glenn Miller and His Orchestra. Etta James got a hold of the song, added violin accompaniment to her powerful and soulful voice, and the rest is history.

Like I said, there have been many covers of this song and I have listened to my fair share but as I stopped to recall the ones I listened to, I never really heard a cover performed by a male. It has always been female vocalist that covered this song such as Kelly Clarkson, Beyonce, and the countless others on YouTube. Part of me is to blame for not ever having listened to a cover performed by a male. At Last was one of those songs that I considered only singable by women since I felt they only had the vocals to best match the emotion and power of Etta James.

Chris Cendana's cover definitely proves me wrong in that. He sings the song with such smoothness but also delivers those few notes in the song with power. His arrangement and composition of the song on acoustic guitar is also beautifully done. There's no heavy strumming which would have taken away the elegance from the song. Instead, a simple picking pattern is played with an occasional light strumming but it mostly picking. Chris Cendana really did an amazing job with this cover from his vocals to his instrumental arrangement. I'm definitely going to be checking out more of his videos on YouTube. Enjoy!

Sophia Grace & Rosie- Thrift Shop

You've never heard of Sophia Grace and Rosie before then you've never lived. Ok, maybe that's a little harsh but seriously, you do not know what you are missing. These two girls are awesome! They own the stage and microphone like it's nobody's business. They have amazing stage presence especially for being so young.

They shot to stardom after a video of them performing Nicki Minaj's Superbass. Ellen Degeneres saw their video and decided to bring them on her show to perform the song. Since then they have been regulars on Ellen, performing new songs or interacting with various celebrities. The new song they have covered is Thrift Store with their own choreographed dance moves. It's really a great video to watch. Enjoy!

Jenny Owen Youngs- Hot In Herre

I love this cover for two reasons. First, the music video is amazing. The music video is corky, hilarious, and it expresses the humor of Jenny Owen Youngs. Second, Jenny Owen Youngs, a typical awkward white girl, is covering a rap song, a Nelly song nonetheless. It's just out of the norm but this is by far one of my favorite covers. With dancing penguins, polar bears, and Bigfoot, you just can not go wrong.
The simplicity of the cover is also great. I really enjoyed the chorus of the cover much more, actually, than the original. Nothing to fancy was done in this cover but if you count a break dancing polar bear as fancy, then yes, they got fancy. It's really just a fun, easy to sing along to cover. Enjoy!

I think I've reviewed one of Tori Kelly's cover before or it may have been one that she was featured in. Anyways, she is definitely one of my favorites on YouTube and I'm always looking out for her new videos. She has an amazing voice with many different ranges AND she's awesome at guitar.

A friend of mine had showed me her cover of Thinking Bout You and I was instantly hooked on her songs/covers. She is definitely talented and I'm surprised that more people have not heard of her. So check her out on YouTube! Enjoy!

Kait Weston- Wide Awake

I recently just discovered Kait Weston as I was looking for cover songs for this post. So I'm not familiar with her work but from the few videos that I've watched so far, she has talent! Her voice is definitely powerful and every note she sings comes with such ease for her.

Her cover of Wide Awake originally performed by Katy Perry is really good. With her powerful vocals, she brings new elements to the song. Also, having just a piano accompany her voice definitely allows for her vocals to stand out more. If she was just doing an acapella version, it still would have been great.

The Clientele- Paper Planes

The Clientele  cover's M.I.A.'s hit Paper Planes. The original is very loud and there's a lot going on in the song at once. There's not synths or sound clips of gunshots in this cover. It was a very well done cover and there was some things that The Clientele did that I really enjoyed. For starters, I was able to understand all the lyrics and as I said earlier, it was not cluttered with noise.  That's nothing against the original and I love the original. The original has a "hustle" style quality to it while the cover is more chill and laid back. The addition of a violin and what appears to be an upright violin but I'm not sure on that, added a some nice sounds to the song. The xylophone was a nice touch as well. Enjoy!

Portland Cello Project and Alan Sparhawk- Institutionalized

Institutionalized by Suicidal Tendencies is a classic. If you've never heard it you are missing out. This has to be that one song that every teenager related to. I mean when you are a teenager everyone always thinks there is something is wrong with you when there isn't.

The original is heavy sounding song with a raunchy lead guitar. If you haven't guessed it yet, the majority of the instruments in this cover are cellos. Usually, cellos are associated with classical music, genres that lean towards elegant and graceful. Having cellos in a hardcore punk song is definitely unusual but it worked out great. The cellos did not sound out of place at all. It gives it a more heavy sound and maybe sound a little more psychotic. The french horn (am assuming that's what it is cause I'm not an horn expert) adds a nice sound to the cover as well. Enjoy!

Filter- Happy Together

So I'm pretty sure everyone has heard this version of Happy Together from The Great Gatsby trailer. When I heard it in the trailer it immediately caught my attention. The original song by The Turtles is upbeat, light and happy type of song. It's simple to sing along to and sort of embodies 1960's innocent carefree lifestyle.

Now Filter's version is the exact opposite of that. The beginning is slow-paced, I mean really slow. The singer is practically enunciating every single syllable as if trying to teach someone who doesn't speak English to at least mimic the sounds. Ok, maybe not that slow but it still slow. Although, the slow tempo is what makes it so good. It makes it sound darker and more psychotic. It actually sounds like the song is about a extremely psychotic and "love-sick" individual is singing (stalking) the one he loves/admires from afar but this person wants nothing to do with him or even knows he exists. It really felt like he was singing this while looking through the window of this girl, it was just that creepy but good. The delivery of the way they song is sung actually was able to change the entire meaning of the song altogether. I really don't know any other song that has done that but Filter has definitely succeeded in that area.

However, the chorus sections get a little too hardcore for my tastes. Some people might enjoy it but I didn't care for it much. I really just liked the verses and that's about it.

The Wood Brothers- P.Y.T (Pretty Young Thing)

The Wood Brothers cover Michael Jackson's P.Y.T. It's a pretty iconic song so covering it has be done well, real well. I feel like The Wood Brothers were able to accomplish that. Consisting of an acoustic guitar with some slide guitar elements, a upright bass, a melodica (key-flute/pianica), and an improvised, non traditional instrument known simply as a shit-ar. When laying eyes on it, you'll realize why they refer to it as that. However, I will give them points for creativity and uniqueness for this instrument which is basically a beat up guitar with various "noise makers" attached to it.

Anyway, their cover was so amazing. Oliver Wood has really unique vocals especially for this type of song. Not only did their instrumentation bring new flavor to the song but his vocals did as well. They made this song their own while giving the original justice. I may even go as so far to say that I prefer this cover to the original. They gave it an upbeat folk feel and the slide guitar parts were awesome. Especially, during the bridge/break when they substituted MJ's 'na na na's" for a slide guitar riff. Amazing.

Bass Causality- Can't Stop

I don't know what this guy's name is so I only can only go by his YouTube name but he just made me find a whole new appreciation for the bass/upright bass. I'm a fan of rockabilly music so an upright bass is nothing new to my ears but the way this guy performs this instrument puts it into a whole new light. The original is fast-paced and extremely intense but he covers the song with such class and grace. It's as if I'm listening to a whole new song, it's just that beautiful. Some of his (Bass Causality) covers are played with the same qualities. Everyone must definitely and immediately check him out! Enjoy!

AJ Rafael and KZ Tandingan-Titanium

Yet again Aj Rafael is making another appearance on my blog. He should really start paying me or at least make me his publicist for all the exposure I am getting him. The exposure consisting of the eight, possibly nine  people that read me blog.

KZ Tandingan sings along with AJ in their cover of Titanium originally by David Guetta ft. Sia. KZ Tandinagan was the first winner of The X Factor Philippines and it's no surprise because she has an extraordinary voice. When I first heard her sing I was immediately jealous of her voice but then that jealousy turned into admiration. Both their voices complement each other so well that as soon as they started singing together, I got chills. No joke.

The simplicity of the cover was just perfect. There was no synths, effects, drums to distract you from the pure talent. Most songs now are overloaded with these things and it becomes extremely distracting, for me at least, when listening to the song. The basics of the song is drowned out and all that you can hear is just noise. I'm not saying every artist does this and some have actually found a good balance such as David Guetta but it is nice to hear once in a while a singer(s) and their one instrument. AJ and KZ definitely are able to bring the raw emotion and essence out of the song by sticking to the basics. It really is an amazing cover and one of my favorites so far. Enjoy!

TwentyForSeven- The A Team

TwentyForSeven covers Ed Sheeran's The A Team and they do a magnificent job at it.  Don't let their appearance fool you because they are extremely talented. I let it fool me when I watched one of their covers for the first time. I saw the plugs and messy hair and thought pop-punk band. Then I heard them play and it was complete opposite. It was alternative but mellow too. I also judged the lead singer's ability to sing based on his looks. I thought he was way too good looking to have any type of vocals. To my surprise, he had amazing vocals! He's got the looks and the voice. He's one of the lucky one's I guess. But, seriously this band is amazing. They did a great job with the cover but they kept it straight to the original. Not much of their own style in it. I would have loved to see more of their own originality in the cover but besides that they were amazing! Enjoy!

Wye Oak- Mother

Mother by Danzig, in my book, is considered a classic. It's one of the few songs I like from him after he left The Misfits. Mother has a definite dark vibe to it but, really, what Danzig doesn't?! Everything Danzig does is dark, menacing, and gothic. I once saw a video of Glen Danzig discussing his book collection and even that is dark, both figuratively and literally.

Anyway, on to the cover. Wye Oak is your typical indie band of today. Their sound is pretty mellow at times but when they get their energy going, they really bring it hard. There are only two members in Wye Oak which is pretty amazing considering the complexity of their songs with the different instruments. In fact, Andy Stack plays the drums, keyboards, and sings backup vocals. Jenn Wasner's is lead vocals and plays the guitar. She kind of reminds me a little of Florence Welch's voice for Florence + The Machine. You may noticed that they do not have a bass player. Well, actually Andy Stack plays the bass notes on his keyboard with his left hand while playing the drums with his feet and right hand! Talk about multitasking!

When I saw that they were covering Mother I was a little put off. Wye Oak's sound is on the opposite side of the the spectrum compared to Danzig. Wye Oak is indie dream pop while Danzig is heavy metal. So you can see why I was extremely skeptical that Wye Oak can pull off this song.

To my surprise, Wye Oak nailed it! They incorporated their own style and still had the dark elements of the original. I also love how they added a tuba to the mix which gave their cover a heavier sound. It did start of slow but as soon as they got into the chorus it began to pick up. Though, I will admit that after a few times listening to it I began to love the crawl of the intro into the chorus. The break after the second chorus is insane! I wanted a kick-ass guitar solo like in the original but after hearing the break, I loved it even more than the solo. The break is definitely a hardcore build up, bringing the song home and pumping up the listener. Like I said earlier, I wasn't really convinced Wye Oak can pull this song off but the proved me wrong.

If you liked this band, Wye Oak has an album released called Civilian. You should definitely check them out. Enjoy!

Pentatonix- Gangnam Style

I don't know what it is about this video but I laugh every time I watch it. It might be the cheesiness of it, the ridiculous dancing, the hilarious attempt at singing in Korean, or maybe the high-pitched scream towards the end. In fact, it could be all of these things that make this cover hilarious but fun to watch.

Besides all that, Pentatonix did an amazing job with this cover. Vocals were crazy good and each one's individual part was great. As far as his attempt to sing in Korean, I'm guessing it was good. It sounded like Korean to me. But how would I know since I don't speak Korean. I'm pretty sure fluent Korean speakers would criticize differently but from me they get two thumbs up!

Pentatonix is an amazing acappella group and if you really like that style of music I encourage you to check them out. I mean, they won The Sing Off so they have to good, right? :) Enjoy!

P.S. the part that made me laugh the hardest is at 2:30.

Caroline Brooks- California Love

Caroline Brooks covers California Love originally by 2Pac and kills it! I thought it to be impossible to do what Caroline Brooks did and actually make it...great.  She does the song justice and still is able to make it her own.

Even though she covers a rap song, a gangsta rap song at that, she does not give in to rapping in her cover. That's something that I really enjoyed about her cover. She sang the lyrics instead of rapping them and made them audible, just kidding. In no way am I dissing 2Pac's rapping skills. :) He was and will always be one of the best rappers of our time. Too bad I can't say the same thing for rappers today.

I also love how they kept the instruments simple too. A piano and a very basic drum set was all that was used, nothing too fancy. They didn't find a need to add pre-recorded drum samples or synths which is a plus in my book! I would have loved it if she added some harmonies but with or without them it was still an amazing cover. And trust me, this is probably not the last time she'll be featured on this blog :) Enjoy!

James Hill-Billie Jean

I may have spoken to soon when I wrote that Jake Shimabukuro was the best ukulele player I've ever heard.  James Hill can definitely hold his own against Jake Shimabukuro in a ukulele contest. Better yet, how awesome would it be if they combined their amazing ukulele skills to create a song so awesome it's mind-blowing!? For now, we have to enjoy their talents separately and that's not bad at all.

James Hill covers Michael Jackson's Billie Jean in this video. He starts off light in this cover with some hammering. When he gets into the intro of the song, it begins to sound familiar and a few audience members quickly recognize the riff. Little by little he adds more into the song until it's almost impossible to ignore what tune he is playing. The audience react in disbelief and amazement as they realize it's Billie Jean. I feel that they also can't believe that he is able to play this song on just a ukulele and is able to recreate the drum, guitar, and bass part from the original. I've never in my life heard a ukulele played like that and I know I had a look of amazement on my face as a watched this video.

It really is such a fun and unique cover. Also, not only is this covered by a ukulele but James Hill just doesn't sing the lyrics, he speaks them! Yup, that right, it's a spoken word ukulele cover. Enjoy!

Amy Winehouse- The Girl From Ipanema

The Girl From Ipanema is an iconic song from the 60s. It's sound symbolizes the cool cat, swinger lifestyle of many people during that time while the lyrics tell a different story. The original was performed by Astrud Gilberto and Stan Getz in Portuguese and later in English. The original is slow paced with a jazz feel or also known as bossa nova. Bossa Nova was a style of music in Brazil that mixed samba and jazz and became popular in the 60s. The Girl From Ipanema definitely embodied that style back then.

Over the years, this song has been covered countless times by various artists with various musical styles. Even Ol' Blue Eyes, Frank Sinatra has covered it and I have to tell you, I almost changed this post to his cover! It was just so amazing! Don't worry though, I'll put a link to his cover at the bottom.

Now on to Amy Winehouse's version of The Girl From Ipanema. Her version sticks to original as far as instrumental. The drums are more profound and the tempo is sped up a little but other than that it stays in the regions of the original. Her voice is great as well and definitely differs from the delicate voice of Astrud Gilberto. Amy Winehouse voice is more powerful and intense which is a nice addition to the song. She even does some scatting at the end and you just can't go wrong with scatting.

Walk Off The Earth- Polly

Here's another cover by Walk Off The Earth because I couldn't just post one. Polly by Nirvana is one the most depressing sounding song I've ever heard. With Kurt Cobain's low vocals, drop d tuning on his guitar, and the lyrics of either a bird named Polly or a kidnapping of a girl named Polly, it was bound to sound depressing. But that's what made it such a good song.

Walk Off The Earth kept the same tempo and "uninterested" tone but they did add something new to it. You guessed it, a ukulele. Some might say that ukulele can't be used in slow depressing songs because it defeats the purpose of a uke. I mean ukuleles are associated with happiness and it's high, upbeat sound just doesn't mash with slower songs. I, on the other hand, think they can be used in any song. If any one can take a uke and a turn a slow sad song into an upbeat cover then kudos to them.
So, the addition to the ukulele in this song is awesome and I give them two thumbs up for it! Enjoy!

Walk Off The Earth-Someone Like You

Walk Off The Earth is best known for their cover of Somebody That I Used To Know in which five people played on one acoustic guitar simultaneously. It went viral really fast and they even performed it on Ellen.

Even though they are not sharing one instrument in this cover of Someone Like You, they are switching instruments with each other throughout the cover. To me, that's pretty impressive to be able to do that while keeping time and tempo. Another plus about this cover is the use of an upright bass and a ukulele. You just can't go wrong with those instruments. The vocals were also amazing. I loved her low, raspy voice. This proves that not every great singer has to be a soprano because altos are just as great and powerful! So enjoy!

Taken By Trees-Sweet Child O' Mine

Taken By Trees could not have picked a better power ballad and turn into a typical folk/indie song. While it is a good cover it's just missing the raw energy Axl Rose's vocals and the intense "in your face" power of Slash's guitar. I know that they could not duplicate those things exactly and that the point of covers it to make it your own and apply your musical style. I just couldn't shake the feeling that something was missing but it is still great cover.

They did take a power ballad and turn it into a fokish indie song with a slow tempo. The main riff played in the original is usually played by an electric guitar. In this cover it is played by a piano with light drums in background and an acoustic guitar playing rhythm. I really enjoy the arrangement of the instruments in the chorus especially the piano and drums. It sounds amazing. Although it does not have kick ass guitar solo the fade out of the piano and the "ah's" have to due. Enjoy!

Michael Winslow-Whole Lotta Love

Michael Winslow is mostly known for his amazing talent of creating sound effects with his mouth. You name any type of sound and this guy will mostly likely recreate it. In this video, he covers Led Zeppelin's Whole Lotta Love but not by singing it although he does sing a little bit in the beginning. The amazing part about this video is that he recreates the sound of the electric guitar and even performs the guitar solo dead on. It's just crazy to see him perform all these sounds with just his mouth! It may not exactly be a cover but it is still an amazing performance of the song. Enjoy!

The Mamas & The Papas- Dream A Little Dream of Me

Most people did not know that Dream A Little Dream of Me by The Mamas & The Papas is actually a cover. It was originally recorded by Ozzie Nelson and His Orchestra in 1931. Over the years it the song has been covered by dozens of performers including Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong, Bing Crosby, Nat King Cole, and so many more.

The Mamas and The Papas version is the most recognized of all the other covers. Mama Cass sings this song with such grace and class. Every time I hear this song I think of 1920's performer singing in a late night jazz club and I definitely think that is the visual they were going for. The song also puts the listener into a trance like state almost like a lullaby except without wanting to fall asleep. This cover is truly amazing and my all-time favorite song from The Mamas & Papas. It's just so good you are not going to want to stop listening.  Enjoy!

AJ Rafael and Nina Faye- How Deep Is Your Love

AJ Rafael has so many awesome covers that I could not just do one. So here is one more for the night but it probably won't be the last in this blog.

How Deep Is Your Love was made famous by the Bee Gees and is my favorite songs by them. When I saw the video in the sidebar on AJ's channel I immediately clicked on it. I had to see it they did the song justice and they did! He sings this song with Nina Faye who has amazing vocals. AJ's vocals are not too bad either and he has the ability to sing with others with different vocal ranges and styles.

This cover is simple but beautiful and that's what makes it so good. The little scat part in the middle of the song was also a nice addition too. Enjoy!

Doo Wop (That Thing) A Cappella

This A Cappella version of Doo Wop is amazing. I'm not familiar with everyone participating in the video but I did recognize Tori Kelly and AJ Rafael in the video. Both of them are known for posting videos of themselves singing covers, jamming with friends, or singing originals. They are both very talented musicians and you should definitely check them out.

In this cover, each person is singing a different part of the song, either various vocal parts or instrument parts. When it all comes together, it sounds awesome. So there is no actual instruments being played or at least being played on camera. A cajon can be heard being played in the background towards the middle of the video. Other than that each person is singing the various parts of the song.

The actual lyrics of the song are being sung by Jumoke Hill and he just absolutely kills it. He walked in singing like a boss in this video. He definitely brought the soul and power to this cover.

Seth G.- Lights

Seth G. covers "Lights" by Ellie Goulding and makes it amazing. However, it's not just any cover. Seth G. doesn't "wow" us with amazing vocals but with the beautiful sound of the violin. Violins have a way of taking a song and making it powerful and beautiful no matter what an that's just what happens with "Lights" in this cover. Seth G. plays with such emotion and beauty that "Lights" because ten times more powerful. Compared to the original, the cover is definitely on a whole other emotional level and by that I mean the way the listener is affected by it. I hope this video brings a new appreciation of the violin to many people who might feel this instrument is outdated or unconventional for today's music. Enjoy!

Joseph Gordon-Levitt-Ignition

Who doesn't love Joseph Gordon-Levitt?! If you don't you definitely will after watching his cover of R. Kelly's "Iginition" and if you already do this is just going to make you love him even more. He clearly is more than just an actor and he definitely surprised with his talents on guitar and singing.  This is a cover that was done for fun in front of an audience at OSU and he did a really great job performing it. Enjoy!

The Civil Wars- Billie Jean

The Civil Wars cover Michael Jackson's popular song "Billie Jean" and it's just awesome. John Paul White sings lead vocals and plays the acoustic guitar in this cover while Joy Williams is doing backup. Both their voices are amazing in this cover and they really do complement each other so well. They give the song a country-folk feel which is definitely different than the original's upbeat pop sound. Instead of strumming through the entire song, John Paul White uses a finger picking pattern which furthers the country feel. However, he plays it at a slower tempo which also gives it a darker feel which is perfect because it gives more depth to the song.

The Civil Wars really did an amazing job with song. It's a shame that they are no longer playing together because this duo had it all. They had amazing chemistry, they are crazy talented, and they had the musical capabilities to make it big. Hopefully later on down the road they will get back together and make more beautiful music but for now enjoy this cover!

Flearoy- Say My Name

This was probably one of the first cover I heard and thought "Wow, covers don't have to be exactly like the original." That's what everyone usually assumes what covers should be like but covers are also a chance for the band/musician to add their own musical style to the song.

Flearoy does that with "Say My Name." A typical R&B song, Flearoy turns it into a folkish acoustic song that works on so many levels. I enjoyed this cover than the original which is saying much. "Say My Name" is not the only Destiny's Child song they have covered. Flearoy has also covered "Bills, Bills, Bills" which just as good too. They are one of my favorite bands that I have discovered off of YouTube and I definitely encourage you to check them out. Enjoy!

Jake Shimabukuro-While My Guitar Gently Weeps

THIS IS AMAZING! Sorry for "shouting" text but this cover deserves it. Jake Shimabukuro is awesome! What he is able to do on his ukelele is crazy and I've never seen or heard anyone else do that kind of intense playing before or after.

When I was learning how to play ukelele I was looking at YouTube videos of various people showing off their talent on the tiny instrument but none of them even compared to what Jake Shimabukuro was doing. When I saw this cover I was completely flabbergasted and I couldn't believe what I was seeing and hearing. Never in a million years did I think someone can take such a guitar oriented song and make a ukelele cover. Obviously, I underestimated the power and capabilities of the ukelele and Jake Shimabukuro definitely unleashes these things for the world to see.

This not his only cover of classic songs. He also has a cover of freaking "Bohemian Rhapsody" by Queen and just nails it. He not only limits himself to covers and has his own original songs. I definitely encourage you to check out his videos because he truly is gifted in playing this tiny four string instrument. Enjoy!

Zee Avi- First Of The Gang To Die

Zee Avi covers Morrissey's classic "First Of The Gang To Die." This is an absolutely amazing cover that Zee Avi keeps simple but classy. The only instrument used is an acoustic guitar that accompanies Zee Avi's soft but soothing voice so well.

The guitar uses a picking pattern instead of being constantly strummed which gives it a spanish/flamencoesque style but at steady tempo. Because of the song's steady tempo it sounds a little like a lullaby as well. Which just puts the listener into this calming dream-like trance. It's definitely a cover song to sit back and lounge to.

Goldfinger- 99 Red Balloons

"99 Red Balloons" is a pretty recognizable tune. Everyone has heard it at least once and probably had it  stuck in their head as well. If you have heard of this song then you can probably remember trying to sing along to it. It may have been a bit difficult since the song was originally performed in German. That's because "99 Red Balloons" was written and performed originally by Nena, a German pop-rock band. Lucky for those who don't speak or understand German, Nena recorded an English version as well.

Goldfinger covers the 1983 hit by adding elements of ska and punk rock. This version of the song is more intense and "head banging," which I found myself doing throughout the song. Goldfinger did a great job adding their music style but keeping it to the original. Lead singer, John Feldmann even sang some of the lyrics in German which is the language sang in the original.
Enjoy!

Ryan Beatty - Valerie

"Valerie," the song made famous by Amy Winehouse. It was originally played by The Zutons but Amy Winehouse sang who own version of it which made "Valerie" a hit.

Ryan Beatty is best known on YouTube for posting himself singing covers of songs. Some might compare him to Justin Bieber but this kid deserves more than to just be called Justin Bieber 2.0. He has an amazing voice that far exceeds that of Justin Bieber.

"Valerie" is a difficult song to sing and because it's a soulful, bluesy song that doesn't make it any easier. People with the right type of soulful voice is hard to come by but Ryan Beatty is able to accomplish this in the cover. His voice is not, by all means as soulful as Amy Winehouse's but he manages to make this cover his own. With just an acoustic guitar and piano to accompany his voice and played at a slower tempo, the cover is given a more jazz/soul feel compared to Amy Winehouse's upbeat version. It really is an impressive cover. Enjoy!

Phantom Planet- Somebody's Baby

Who knew that Phantom Planet had another song besides "California" which was featured in the opening credits of The O.C. For all you die hard Phantom Planet fans (cause I'm sure there's so many) you would probably enjoy this post. Now, I'm only kidding with all the jokes...maybe, but Phantom Planet is a decent band. They definitely do not get the exposure and credit they deserve.

"Somebody's Baby" is probably most recognized as the song in Fast Times at Ridgemont High. I know that's where I heard the song for first time. It was originally sung by Jackson Browne whose style consists of soft rock/folk with elements of country. However, Phantom Planet's cover is more fast-paced and in your face. Of course, it plays to their style of alternative rock.

This is one of my favorite songs and instantly fell in love with it when I heard it in the movie but when I heard that Phantom Planet did a cover of it I was a bit wary. Since I loved the original so much I was afraid they were not going to do it justice and possibly just ruin it. To my surprise I loved the cover more than original. I love how it's more fast-paced, the drums are more intense, and has more of a rock feel to it. And when I say "rock feel" it's more based off my generation's definition of "rock." The only downside to this cover is that it does not include that awesome piano intro/riff. Besides that it's a great cover and now Phantom Planet has two songs to their set list! Just kidding! Enjoy!

Edei- Just Dance

I never thought "Just Dance" could sound so good! While the original by Lady Gaga is overloaded with synthesizers and an overpowering drum beat this cover is kept simple. Don't get me wrong, I like the original and Lady Gaga has an amazing voice when it's not drowned out by synths but it's a party song and nothing more. However, with just the vocals of Edei and an acoustic guitar, "Just Dance" is shaped into something more than a party song.

First of all, I have to talk about the guy playing the guitar. Confession Time: I actually found this video because I was looking for the chords to this song and I got led to this cover. Anyway, the guitarist is amazing with the rhythm and structure of the cover especially during the pre-chorus. I think that's what makes this cover stand out a lot more among others.

Edie's voice only furthers that gap between other covers. However, I feel that her voice is a lot more powerful than what she lets us hear. At times you can sort of hear her getting to that point but then holds back. Although, even if she is holding back her voice is stunning already.
Enjoy!

Brenden MacFarlane-Just Another Day/House of the Rising Sun

I stumbled on one of Brenden MacFarlane's videos a year or so ago. Actually, the only real reason why I clicked on his video was because the title was "white kid sings the blues." I mean, I couldn't pass up a video with that kind of title and truthfully, I wasn't expecting to hear what I did. This kid could really sing the blues! My expression was the same as the guitar shop owner's face when this kid began to belt out "Just Another Day" by Sam Cooke & The Soul Stirrers. People usually say that the only way anyone can sing the blues properly is if they been through troubles and hardships. If that's the case this kid must have had a really tough life at a young age! It was unbelievable how much control he had over his voice and the notes he was hitting.

His cover of "House of the Rising Sun" is just as good as Just Another Day. I know how hard "House of the Rising Sun" is to sing so for him sing it with such ease is crazy. It's all natural for him which is amazing and I am truly jealous of his voice. Now it's been a few years since his cover of "Just Another Day" so his voice has definitely changed. Of course that happens but he still has an amazing voice. I definitely encourage you to check him out on YouTube. He has other covers that he's sung and even has an album out. For now, though,  enjoy his cover of  "Just Another Day" and "House of the Rising Sun"

Hugo- 99 Problems

I never thought I would hear a bluegrass version of 99 Problems but I did and it was AMAZING! Hugo took Jay-Z's 99 Problems and did a complete 180 on it by making a bluegrass cover. I actually liked Hugo's version better than the original.
The instrumentation was excellent with the addition of a banjo and a harmonica. I mean, you just can't go wrong with a banjo and the harmonica solo just made it even better. And really, a bluegrass music video wouldn't be complete without a stuffed coyote and American flags in the background.
Enjoy!

Intros and such

Everybody enjoys a well done cover of a popular song. However, for musicians and bands covering a popular and well liked song is risky. The cover can either be magnificent or fail miserably and that's a gamble all musicians have to take when covering a song.

Whatever the case might be it is interesting to listen to how some musicians take a song and put their own style into it. Covering a song is not just copying chord for chord or note for note. It's about the musician(s) making it their own but also at the same time keeping it to the original and still giving it justice.

In this blog I will post a variety of cover songs done by various musicians and bands. Hopefully, you will come to enjoy cover songs as much as I do.

Bonus Video!
Now, just for laughs, here's my friend and I's version of Nickelback's "How you Remind Me"
